Which Knee Mill, 3/4 Size?

I have a Millrite and like it a lot, that would be a great mill if the one you have a lead on works out. Something that might work for you is a Jet JVM-836. I believe they are about the same height as a Millrite, so should fit in your space. Knuth also made a copy of the Deckel, it won’t be to the same quality, but if you found one used might work for you.

Height is a big issue on mills, I have a 6-1/2 foot ceiling in my shop so a have dealt with your issue.

You have to consider both actual height as well as leaving enough to comfortably access the drawbar.

Clausing 8520 comes in at 66" or 70" depending on whether or not it has the 4" spacer block. 8530 came standard with the block so is 70". I think the Rockwell mills are about 71".

As I recall the Burke / Powermatic Millrites are 76" which cut it too close for me to consider, but should work for you.

There are several import mills that might work for you, the most common are currently being sold by Harbor Freight and Grizzly as 6x26 or 8x30, but can also be found branded as Select, Enco and a few others. There are some smaller Bridgeport styled import mills that might work for you but I don't know model numbers.

The older round ram Bridgeport M head mills are quite a bit shorter than the current J head type, I think about the same height as the Millrite. Because of the round ram and age they are less popular than the J head, so often sell for very reasonable prices.

Another option could be to find a horizontal mill with a vertical milling attachment.

I just measured my Millrite, it is 72-3/4” from floor to the top of the motor. I don’t have adjusting feet in it, so that is the measurement to the bottom of the base. I also have a three phase motor, so single phase might be a different height.

that would be squeezing it in there ..

You won’t need much more height than that once it is in there, a few more inches if you wanted to take the motor out is about it. If you need to remove the drawbar, I haven’t yet in 17 years, you can always tilt the head sideways and access it that way.

You’re not going to find much shorter than that unless you look at the small bench mills, and even some of them are taller than the Burke on the stand.

unless i was to find a horizontal mill that has the milling head with it that will fit in the garage, it is looking like a Millrite is the path i will be following. I did find one that i was interested in, but it looks like it may have already been sold due to the fact that after several attempts to contact the seller, no response..
