What type of Mill would compliment a SouthBend Lathe in a Home Workshop?

I couldn't agree more, I felt so lucky when I stumbled across my heavy 10. I was ready to buy a chinese lathe because I could not find a decent used lathe, then I found my south bend. It is worth every hour I have put into restoring it and the quality and spindle bore size is a plus. The other day I was at a fab shop making a delivery and I saw a powermatic mill with a bunch of stuff piled on it and not plugged in, a bridgeport sat across from it. I asked one of the guys about the powermatic and he said he has been there for 6 yrs. and never seen it plugged in. So I asked the shop foreman if it was for sale? He said I dunno, we haven't used it since we got the bridgeport, I'll ask the owner for you, it would be better than scrapping it. I hope to have an answer the next time I am there. As a hobbiest I think it would suit me just fine. I might be able to scoop up this unadvertised machine like I did my lathe. :dunno:

Well, did you get the Millrite????

Love those things, have 2 at the moment

Can keep an eye on fleabay as well, that's where I bought my Clausing 8520. Searched a long time, but found one up for auction from a guy in Boston. He was in the process of selling off either his uncle or fathers home shop tools. It was listed as a "Buy it Now" or make offer listing. I made an offer of $1400 and got it because of an error he made replying to my offer (he mistakenly used the counter offer option for $1401 because he wanted to keep my offer active since it would end before the listing) and let me have it even though I told him I wouldn't hold him to it since his action prematurely ended the auction.

Mine uses the MT2 taper, but some use a No. 7 Brown and Sharpe taper according to this site... http://www.lathes.co.uk/clausing vertical/
I don't know much about the Grizzly's beyond the reviews I read while shopping, but I believe most use R8 taper tooling which are cheaper and easier to find I've read (I got a whole cabinet of tooling with mine)

FYI: The guy I bought mine from crated it and took it to the shipping terminal for no cost (I tossed him some gas money anyway), but it still ran me over $600 to ship it freight to Illinois where I picked it up at the terminal. It would have run another $150 plus to have it delivered to my house with end gate service.

As far as the thread, I think it goes nice beside my SB 9A lathe.

Well I got to meet with the owner of the shop and we discussed the powermatic/burke. It's filthy, covered in shop dust from years of not being used. It has all the handles and the table only has one cutter mark. draw bar is good, I think it takes r8 collets. 220 3 phase and step pully for speed changes, really skinny belt? I think the model is MVN, serial no. 77 11 22. I'm not sure if the terminology is correct here but here goes, the large casting that sets on top of the column on dovetails has four bolts that tighten it down or clamp it, one corner of the casting in the rear is broken off so only three bolts are there. I offered him $300.00 for it, he said let me talk to my partner, we exchanged phone numbers, maybe I'll get a counter offer?:dunno: It's not a dead deal yet just in limbo, I am trying to be patient, I want this machine but I need it to be cheap as it may need some work.

I have the exact same combine. Sb9a and an 8520

Those Powermatics are the best of the small mills IMO. Green with a white racing stripe, right?
I have two. If I found one with only one table mark for under $500, I'd have 3 of them in a New York Minute!

What size is the table? 7x27 or 8x36, with possibly one or two in-between.

That broken part should not affect anything, you rarely move it.
Might bother you for aesthetic reasons though. I'd get the broken piece if possible.

Do NOT let that thing get away.

I know I'm late to this party, but I'll second the Clausing/Powermatic/Rockwell school of thought. I have the Rockwell vertical next to a SB10K, and they look good together!

I'll back the Clausing 8520 1000% Best bang for the buck IMHO.

"Billy G" :))

The owners decided not to sell it, probably want more money than I can pay. Oh well, I'll keep looking, I really wanted a bench top mill of some kind anyway.
