what tool for cutting a circlip groove??

I've had good luck with the cheep Chinese HSS blanks for odd low usage cutters like this. Busy Bee sells them up here, three 1/4 inch blanks for $7.49

PS - can anyone recommend a good source for HSS blanks?? the ones on amazon seem a bit pricey at $15 USD a pop or so - or is that a deal? seems to me one could buy HSS bar stock for a lot less?
Was that for a single blank? I saw a package of five. MSC sells Interstate brand M2 HSS in 1/4" for just over $3. Cobalt is more pricey.

hmmm - i have a set of 3/8" accusize - a few of them take similarly shaped inserts ... i WONDER if i could just swap out the insert???

in a pinch i guess i could use the threading tool - a snap ring might sit in a V-grooved channel nicely perhaps (?)

If there is much side load on the snap ring it could slide up the incline of the v groove.

I find that the 1/2" lathe bits do little for me. There is 10x as much grinding to achieve the tool shape that I want and my 10 x 22 lathe really can't take advantage of the increased rigidity. For the grooving tool you need, I would probably use a 1/8" bit. My usual choice for HSS lathe bits is 1/4" or 3/8". Looking at my stash of bits, I made a .030" grooving tool by grinding down the side of a parting tool.

I haven't bought lathe bits from CME but have had good luck with other purchases.

interesting - thanks - i will consider this. I thought one of the ancillary advantages of the half inch bits is that i could cut multiple grooves at the same time - though i guess alignment better be BANG ON to do so ...

am i best off shaping my own HSS tooling for this purpose?

Absolutely.

yes if things go well i expect to be making a few hundred of these ... will have to try some different solutions out

I would definitely make the groove square.
To make a prototype why not just narrow the tip of a HSS parting blade to the thickness you need. You are only cutting 0.5 mm deep so it should be short and sweet to grind. Also easy to resharpen if you decide to make them in quantity.
