Well, I've been stripping paint off the old girl and doing some wet scraping. I don't want to stir up any dust cause I figure that paint is full of lead. Kleen Strip does a really good job but it stings a little when you get some on ya. I got tired of scraping and did a little exploring on the knee lift mechanism. I have looked at all the Gorton information and pictures I could find and no where have I found a knee post like the one on this mill. It has a flare fitting on the bottom and on the top at the back of the housing. I had told my wife that it looked like a hydraulic cylinder, soooo, I shot air into the fitting and the knee lifted and came back down when I removed the blow gun. Man that will relieve a lot of hand cranking. Now all I have to do is find a power unit to hook up to it.

I'm working on a $35 lawn mower. The $70 worm drive transmission, to be exact. I found a used one for $20, and then remembered the zillion dollars worth of machines in my shop. I said to myself, "I wonder if I can make that?" and then spent countless hours setting it up, making new feed gears, arbors, etc. I even bought a $65 cutter to flute the worm wheel hob with. To top it off, the lawn mower works fine without a transmission. You just kinda push it around the yard...
Let's try this again. That last one was all messed up. I have completely redesigned the Steady Rest I startrd. It was not to my liking. :lmao: This one will take longer but is totally right. It will take a 1/2" min. dia to a whopping 4 1/8" max dia.

The DRO install looks great. Your going to be spoiled with all the new stuff on the lathe. The spider looks nice too. How did you mount the spider to your spindle? Is it a screw on, with set screw? Just wondering, because I had a job recently that I really could have used the spider. I ended up stuffing rags in around the tube to keep it from floppin around. So , I think I should be buildin one soon.
OK Paul.
I did some today but no pix. I will start with pix tomorrow. I just got the tubes bored out and the all thread cut. One plunger that holds the roller is blanked out also. How did we do without the DRO before ??? That DRO is the Cats Patootie. :lmao::lmao::lmao:
