Ok, I see no bites here yet.
Here is a few things I did over the weekend.
I had to fit a handwheel to the knee of my milling machine. I have a power feed on all axis, and the facory crank handle was replaced for saftey issues. I was a simple job to get the hand wheel fit up. I did a facing cut to the front side of the wheel, just to make it look better, and cleaned all the rust of it while it was chucked up.
Once that was done, I had to bore it out in two steps. First bored the through hole to fit the factory bushing, then bored the step of the bushing 1/2 deep, so when the handle pulls back it dissengages.
Over to the mill, to cut the 5 teeth that engage on the factory hub. Done on the rotary table at 72 degree spaces. Quick job of that, lets test fit the hand wheel.
She fits great.

The next job at hand was replace the ill fitting chuck keys with keys that fit proper. A mindless job, but the keys that are supplyed with most chucks suck, and dont fit very well. So I went digging in the scrap bin, and found enough material to machine these keys.

Fitting up a DRO to my mill..........

IMG_5132.jpg

Used the table stop for mounting the pick-up.
IMG_5136.jpg

Drilled and tapped, mounted a spacer block to get the clearance so I could still use the stops.
IMG_5142.jpg

Mounted one end, ran the table back and forth several times looking for problems, (none found), got it level and drilled and tapped the other end.
IMG_5143.jpg

Routed the cable down underneath, and now just need to fit one to the Y axis, and make up a small panel to mount the displays.

Cheers Phil

You must be excited to get your DRO project started ;)
Your going to really like not dealing with back lash in the screws. I did mine some yrs back, and now I couldnt even imagine going back to compensating for back lash.

When you get more done, post more pics. Other members will be interested on the install. Did your DRO come as a kit, or did you piece it together your self?
Are you going to add sheilds to protect your scales from oil/coolant, or chips?

Good Addition to your Mill
Thanks for sharing

When I was 7 years old we lived on a dairy farm, the farm owners dauther who was about 12 took me into the bushes for show and "don't tell". Now at 65 I can still remember the day and how disappointed I was.
