What is the "tailstock offset method" of turning a taper?

mt 1 offset is .1541-mt2 offset is .1536 mt3 .1567 mt4 ,1633 mt5 .1658 mt6 .162 mt7 .1642, these are the offset for the tailstock this is fig on a 6 inch piece of bar stock, i dye my bar stock cut my relief points at the length i want my taper, i use a digital indicator to set my tailstock jig, for me this worked alot better than the compound cause i cant see the marks on it any more but you can use a tram jig to set your degree with the compound but i havent gotten around trying that yet, now i usually stop just shy of the measurement and finish with emery cloth for final fit:biggrin:mac

I have made a few tailstock centers for turning tapers, and need to take pictures and post them. One is made from scratch and is adjustable in .001" increments. The other I made from a larger than usual top slide from a Derbyshire watch lathe. It is about 4" long and more than 2" wide. I fitted a #2 M.T. shank to its back side, and made a hardened 60 deg. center for the front side. Though it looks rather delicate,it has never failed in use,and I made it in the 70's. My scratch built one is strong indeed, and has a #4 MT shank to fit my large lathe.
