What is the best kind of powered metal saw?

Depends what you want to do with it. I picked up a basically brand new 10" craftsman band saw for $30 at a tool auction. Put a 12 tooth carbon blade on it and it cuts 1 1/2 aluminum just fine. Now that I know it'll work next time I'll get the bi-metal blade. Slow, yes. Price , Great !

I've got a craftsman 10" table-type bandsaw with a bimetal blade but I haven't been able to get the near-perfect cuts that I got with the horizontal bandsaw, due to the fact that I have to hold the work piece and push it through the saw. But I just had an Idea. I might be able to mount the x-y vise that just arrived in the mail onto the bandsaw table and feed the work piece through while clamped in the vise.

+2 on the HF Band saw. For the money you won't get a better deal on a new machine. A little tweaking and you have a pretty amazingly useful and versatile tool.

I like my power hacksaw. Very substantially built compared to the lower quality bandsaws. Also much more accurate when cutting heavy material. As was mentioned above, just don't get in a hurry. It's kind of a 'set it and forget it' tool. I can do other things while it does it's job.

Can't argue with that. ;)

Although in addition to the tweaking it needs a higher and wider stand IMO............higher to save my back, wider to improve stability.

I picked up a early 1900's power hacksaw and a huge 1970's forte horizontal bandsaw for free day before yesterday so barring unfixable problems with both of them, my cutting needs should be met. Thanks for all the tips!

Yes, tool gloat thread coming. I picked these up from dfletch, he has a post titled "free machines". It's a hassle for me to post pics now since my router decided to block this site. I can only access it on my phone or via a tunnel proxy site. Tunnel proxy kills the forum upload script so I have to host from photobucket and post links back here. Just haven't had time yet.
