Vice help

i found that my gage like that measured in 1/2 thousands. . . . . anyway, if you have something small to hold onto, slip a layer of newsprint paper between the part and the back jaw. i read that it works, never needed to try it as im sure im really squishing whatever im clamping. . . . .

What kind of vice is it? I can't see the indicator face so see what your readings are. I would remove the hardened jaw.check under it,stone or file the vise face and indicate it. But I would move the indicator down a little and be sure the ball of the stem is hitting the face. Sort of looks like the stem is hitting and not the ball, but as I said I can't see it to hot at all. Miking (Mic) the jaw is a good idea. Have you indicated the tee slot of your mill? Maybe the mill table is loose and the vice is good?

It could be the stationary jaw of the vise is bowed, which allowed the replaceable jaw to bow. Remove the replaceable jaw and indicate the fixed jaw to see if that's straight. If it is, get the replaceable jaws ground,or coat the jaws with layout fluid and use a piece of 400 grit wet or dry paper and light oil or water and a sheet of glass to lap that little bit off.

The item in question is spelled VISE,not vice.
Actually George the spelling is universal, although generally the North American spelling is with an "s" and the UK with a "c".
Us aussies tend to use either, as depicted by the "Dawn Tool and Vice co" and the "Record Vice", and the "Carbatec Vise range" & "Ridgid Tools pipe vise range".

Cheers Phil

My apologies for helping someone to improve. I usually appreciate any help I can get.

I also think correctly spelling something when Googling or looking in online catalogs helps.

I suppose it is o.k. to offer corrections on technical information, but then not spelling concerned with technical information? I thought I was trying to be helpful.

There are many who say "collects" when they refer to "collets". Now,that is really going to make it difficult for them to Google for information,or to search online catalogs,I would think. This forum is here,I hope, among other things to offer information that is helpful. All learning is good,I have always thought, and, old as I am,I enjoy watching educational TV as much as anything. My library consists of 99.9% of educational books on machining, engraving, woodworking, and other such subjects.

My post could be looked at as sharp,I guess, but calling my post "petty" is definitely sharp, which I do not care for.

I'll second that. New to this myself, I had a heck of a time just a few days ago shopping online for a "Vice", when I was actually looking for a "Vise".

If I may George, maybe it has less to do with offering a useful correction, and more to do with it missing "why" it's useful. I missunderstood your intention when I first read it too. The meaning changes once you realize there's more to it than just spelling. My two cents, take it with a grain of salt. <- Feel free to correct me anytime.
