Pool (Billiard Cues) and wooden pens are commonly turned using a metal lathe.
The main point as already brought up, the lathe has to be kept clean, there are all sorts of nooks and crannies that dust can get into. Not that the metal dust can't get in there either, but.
Some woods like cedar are very acidic. The acid will do some damage over time, but mostly just discolouration. The Silica's in the wood can be very abrasive.
Treat the lathe the same way that you would when using it with a tool post grinder. Clean, Clean, Clean!
