Tap wars

I agree that you don't skimp on taps. Break a cheap or dull one off in a part that you have several hours in is a hard but memorable lesson.
But I will buy used taps. Take two taps of the same type and size and you can feel if one is dull.
I recently bought about 10 lbs of taps at an auction. I sorted them out and tossed about 1/3 of them.
I'm pretty well fixed for taps now but need to contrive a better storage method for them.

Agree with YG1 taps. Taps are one of the few items that are really worth buying high quality.
I was searching on eBay this morning for some YG-1 taps. The first listings I came across were from China. I'm not sure If it's just a label change, YG has expanded their manufacturing to China, or the ones listed are knock offs. The listing claims they're made in S. Korea, but it's hard to believe that a company can make a profit selling items that cost more to import than to make in country. I also noticed neither the label on the box or the printing on the tap say made in "Korea".

Here are some other listings with made in "Korea" on the label and the tool itself:

Buyer Beware!!!

I passed on those for the same reason.

Forgive me Brothers, for I have sinned. I went through my inventory this morning and out of the hundreds of SAE taps I found two Chinese Fastenal FMT 3/8-16 spiral point taps.

I fell into temptation last year at the flea market because they were only $1 each. I fought against the temptation and failed. The vendor was clearly embarrassed having them on his table.

I will pay pennence by squirting myself in the eye with extra thick tap magic each time I use the dirty, evil Chinese taps. I sure hope they wear out fast cause that's gonna hurt!

There are a few Chinese taps in my metric set but no body cares about those. What do those Europeans know anyway......

On a serious note, my inventory is done. Taps and dies. Now I can see which taps I use the most and make sure I've got quality spiral and spiral flute taps in those sizes. As I'm floating around the flea market, if I see a new tap I check my inventory. I do the same with drill bits and other stuff.

Bless you my son for having admitted your sins. Penance should be no more than 7 hail Mary’s, one extra service as an alter boy, and a shot and a beer.

We have all probably made similar sins, but either aren’t aware of it or just won’t admit it. Those in the knock off business do all they can to make you believe you’re buying the genuine products at a steep discount

A good point. I don't generally buy taps on eBay or Aliexpress, or etc. I like All Industrial for quality consumables. Though really the best deals I've ever gotten were from shop closings and retirement sales with maybe 20 year or older taps and drills.

I've got two small sets of YG spiral flute taps that have been great. I just checked to see if they have a country of origin marked anywhere - no markings. I just assumed they were Korean.

While transferring my taps to a new organizer I realized I only have one spiral point tap in 1/2-13. I was actually a bit surprised. Lol.

When I'm shopping surplus I generally don't care a whole lot what brand i find as long as it isn't Chinese and is HSS I'll buy it stupid cheap.

When I'm shopping for new taps I tend to be a bit choosey, but I don't run taps hard all day long.

I have a positive opinion on YG-1, OSG, Union Butterfield. Are Emuge taps worth near double the price for a hobbiest like me? I've never worn out a tap.....
My least favorite tap brand by far.

I have broken more OSG taps than any other brand and I've used a LOT of different brands over the years.

This was an OSG, https://www.hobby-machinist.com/threads/goofs-blunders-you-should-avoid.49036/post-1078468
