8 tpi means each turn of the handwheels moves the table by 0.125" which is a little less convenient than 10 tpi would be (0.10 per turn)
While a bit hard to get used to, once you count-to-8 instead of counting-to-10 its really not "that hard" nor "that confining".
Say you have just done something at position r and want to do another operation at r+0.982. Set the dial to 0.000. Then you crank the axis 7 turns (0.875) and then 0.108 on the dial.
