Stelling dial securing nut.

I have what I think is a stelling dial on my 1922 crossfeed. The securing nut does not seem like it’s stock to me as it only threads on about half way. Also on the face of the dial there are some detents around where the nut seats that I am not sure what the purpose is. I have searched around but can’t find a parts diagram and frustratingly all pics I see of this type of dial don’t show the front face.

Does anyone have a pic or can tell definitively me what is supposed to secure the dial to the shaft?

I figure it’s a thin nut but not sure about the dimples. Figured someone has or can take a pic of an existing dial.

Thanks. IMG_5698.jpegIMG_5699.jpeg

Sadly there isn't a lot of information available or owners who have posted definitive information. I've always wondered how they actually attach to the lathe I think that it's a clamp around the apron bushing but that's always been a guess. This link shows a nut, my experience is a jam nut fits best. I believe there is a keyway and the dial may be hung up on the key preventing the shaft from coming out of the handle.

Please let us know what you learn.

I have pulled off the dial and reseated it but it seems to be all the way on. The dial does have a grub screw that I think is supposed to go into the keyway that was not engaged. I engaged it which will solve my primary issue of the dial unthreading the nut when I got to the end of the cross slide travel. I have not tried pulling off the collar or done anything with the screw shaft to see if there is anything off with how its installed (if I could even tell). I may try doing that at some point but its not critical as it "works" as it is setup. Only real issue now is that the nut not fully engaged but I can just put a jam nut on. I will update the thread when I do.

Thanks Alex. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about these dials.
