Spin Indexer Slipping

I have a no name 5C/ER32 spin indexer that loses it's registration between the spindle and the indexing plate when milling anything but a super light cut. Upon disassembly, I was surprised to find that the indexing plate is just held to the spindle by the friction of a threaded ring. No key, no nuffin. No matter how tight I make that ring I still have to tip toe around that indexer like it was made of gingerbread or it slips and ruins the part. Is this the nature of the beast or am I missing something?
 
Are you talking a spindex or an indexer ? They are 2 different animals .
 
I'll bet the factory was gluing them and forgot to do it on yours. Just a guess
In any case a key or something should be installed

From the description, it would appear that the index plate should be free to rotate relative to the spindle. Otherwise, why would they include a spanner wrench. I can see the utility of it as it would permit alignment of a prior feature to the index plate. I have a Phase II brand and the collar on mine doesn't budge so it may have been tightened with LocTite used to prevent movement.

Problem is I was milling a hex and by the time I got all the way around I had a trapahedarectozoid. I'll try red locktite before getting too ambitious. I don't know about the wheel but the spindle is hard.

That is what is known a s a whirley gig and is not made for milling . That is used on a surface grinder for grinding down short shafts . If you need to mill , you need an indexer such as a Hardinge , Phase 2 etc . They have plates making it impossible to slip .
 
I suspect that Phase II realized your dilemma and locked plate and nut. I couldn't budge my nut. The manual makes no mention of loosing or tightening the nut and a spanner wasn't included.

I purchased mine for measuring runout on syringes we were making at work. I have an RT mounted in my mill so I haven't used the spin indexer in the fashion that you are.
