pipehack: age is no guarantee of expertise. I sent a hand varnished violin I made to a pretty old guy so he could try it out. The violin was very carefully rubbed all over. He took the violin to an "80 year old expert". The old fool thought my violin had been "sprayed with polyurethane". That really ****** me off. I told that idiot to send the violin back immediately. Sold it to someone who had the sense to appreciate it. The person had looked at violins from New York to Va.,and said he had not found ones to match it.
I was Master Musical Instrument Maker in Colonial Williamsburg, founding the shop in 1970. I had been building since 1954. I did my finest work when I was in my 40's. That is when your eyesight and physical self are at their best. I started when I was 13. By then, you should know your trade if you ever will. Stradivari also did his best work about the same age.
