Anyone made or got plans for a sight mover/installer? I picked up an STI Lawman 1911 and want to change the front sight. I'm a little leery about going the old vice and brass punch routine. I've never done sight work before. Or, if you have any tips or tricks and would care to share then myself and others would appreciate it. Thanks.

Search for sight pushers on Google - you'll get a lot of pictures and adds showing various models and functions. Fairly easy to make - just time and patience....

If you google 1911 sight pusher you will find a bunch of images of different sight pushers - Several look like they would be pretty easy to build. the basics require a way to hold the sight pusher in place while moving the sight. I have not done one, so i can't speak to which design is the best, but a few basic styles seem to show up quite often in the search I did.

I was in the process of gathering materials to build one when a friend gave me a commercial unit. I can say for a fact that the unit must be rigid. It must hold the slide very rigidly and the actual pushing arm must be rigid as well. The commercial unit has enough flex to get me in trouble if I'm not very careful.

I really like the vise unit for all the above reasons. I may have to mod my mill vise just so. Thanks for the link.

I have designed and build several models of sight pushers. To take a look, visit sightpushertool.com.
Not too hard to copy, but they are a tad more difficult to make work correctly than may meet the eye.
