Has anyone made any caliber adapters for their 12 gauge shotguns? Im taking an intermediate metal fabrication class this semester in college and we have to pick a final project. Im interested in making one of these adapters and perhaps 2. If anyone has made any of these can i get some info tips or tricks? Thanks.

There's a gentleman that sets up booths at most of the local gun shows that sells them. He makes them in a variety of calibers. The adapters I saw were quite simple but at the same time could require the necessary reamers for proper head spacing. Adapters would make an interesting project. You get to select the proper material, machine it, and heat treat it.

I just started the class on Wednesday so i have a few months to research it and get the materials. Im probably going to use some 1 inch round Stainless Steel rod. Im just going to measure a regular shotgun shell and then whatever caliber i choose, and go from there.

Check out gaugemate.com

I got in early with these guys, did some testing for them. Nice product. Should be a good project for class. The 12 to 20 gauge worked so well i used them for shooting divers on the mississippi river-- pool 19. The 12 to .410 bore not so much. Did not pattern very well.

Something you should be aware of is that some Municipalites can give you hell about owning Shotgun Adapters that are less than 18 inches long. My 410 and 28 guage adaptors are just over 18 inches. Browning probably still makes their sub guage adaptors but I have been looking and I cannot find any.

we use stress proof matt 1144 you need 55 degree for the angle for head space on a 12ga buy a go no go gauge for whatever cal you are going change it to it will save you a lot of time

Just a thought, if you make an adapter it might be best to make it the full length of the bore. The little 4-5" adapters just are not very accurate.

Hi Just my 2 cents worth these people have been making these for a long time. http://www.briley.com/subgaugetubesets.aspx I had a skeet set so I could shoot all gage tournaments back in the 70's they worked great. I loved them because the gun always felt the same no matter what gauge I was shooting. By the way I don't have any connection to, any one in the shooting industry.
Thanks

If I was to make some adapters to fit in a 12 guage chamber my very first one would be in 45/70 caliber but it would be long enough to give satisfactory accuracy down range. Since most older side by side shotguns breech face tend to be quite thin I would limit my 45/70 loads to the 1873 Springfield level of pressure to not wreck my fine Laurona. I think that with a little practice that such an insert could be a much better choice than using rifled slugs.
