Shop time

I’ve seen 5 degrees on tv before. That seems cold…..

Not this time of year. January and February are on the way. The below zero temps are coming. You southern boys live a charmed life and cheap heating bills.

10 here this morning . -10 up at camp . I think the lowest I remember here was -2 back in 2013 . I took a picture of the dash on the S10 coming home from work that morning .

About 12F this morning in Gaithersburg. Much better than the -17F last February with 20mph winds all night in NH. 1/2 the pipes froze that night.

Coldest I've been outside was -30F winter camping in the White Mountains in NH. Moisture from my breath froze in the tent and then snowed in the tent. Sleeping bag had a dusting of snow on it. Boots were at the bottom of the bag and frozen hard as a rock. Sure was tough getting up that morning. To move the van we had to warm up the tranny some with a camp stove, wouldn't budge otherwise. When we finally got into town the temperature was -30F. Bet it was colder. That was way back in my crazy ice climbing days in my 20's

87 was my last year of 3 living on mountain in Harpers ferry WV. Snowed 5 ft on level ground. Couldn’t see my house drifts were so high. Later cold spell hit. Warmest was -15. Several mornings-40. Burnt to breath. Had block heater. Electric heater under oil pan. Several blankets on car. In car as well just in case. Candles. Door latches froze first 5 miles. Bungee corded shut. Then 85 mile drive to Montgomery co md. For work. Looked at drive as part time job. Made much money at job. Now I’m freezing at 30 degrees.

Wow! Luckily it doesn't get that bad here in the Tarheel State.

I recall a few years ago taking a group of Taiwanese engineers to tour my lab in Grimes Iowa. (Not my choice to meet the criteria above). THey were just stunned at the morning weather, -15F. They literally had never felt anything anywhere near freezing. All they wanted to do was pose in front of the bank's outdoor digital temperature display.

You know, really, Nevada City CA is not far away from an ideal place. We have a few summertime days around 100 for a couple hours in the afternoon, maybe two snows a winter, melted off a day later. No earthquakes, hurricanes or flooding. An occasional "atmospheric river" comes along and makes what my folks would have called a few rainy days. You didn't mention fire...that's a possible issue around here, depending on specifics of the property. We've done what we can do. And just reading the news, it appears everybody is leaving California for Texas. So that's a win-win. :)
Nevada City is one of our favorite spots. We stay at the fairgrounds RV park and play tourist.
The Empire mine is amazing.
The downtown draws a lot of tourism with it's gold rush timeframe. Little shops, bars and restaurants are aplenty.

Thinking about it, I really enjoyed the time I spent in North Wales: a lot like the area where I live in Pennsylvania with green, rolling hills (and something they called Snowdon), but seldom above 70F; it snowed once, but just an inch or so and was gone by Noon; sometimes cold and rainy, but there’s always a warm fire and a warming beverage. Golf is a lit different, but I played my lowest round ever there.

Moved back to wake forest area in NC. Mountains are different. People are real different. No offense to any mountain type folks. Most don’t trust or care for flatlanders. Again no offense. Some are wonderful people once they get to know you a little.

Having grown up in Maryland, I am aware of the differences in people/cultures/attitudes/beliefs in a relatively small geographical region, both in the Western Mountains and the Eastern Shore.”

I would leave Harpers ferry cross river. Pull over remove helmet. Was wonderful. Went to battlefield many times. That place would make you think. Over 50,000 soldiers killed in a weekend.
