Shop time

Already have dual switches at the top & bottom of stairs, but these control the office lighting where the stairs are (also have switches by both entrances into the Shop).

Unfortunately, the Family Room lighting is all via receptacles (not my doing) and all wiring within walls so would be a major undertaking to rewire so the top "outlets" are switched. When we win the lottery and find somewhere to build where it's:
  • Not too hot or cold
  • No hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding or snow
  • Nearby some relations (and far away from others: the list keeps changing)
  • Close to necessities
  • Low taxes
Need I go on?

No, No I get it. But until you find a perfect place maybe,

I used to think Memphis: seems like when it does snow it's gone by Noon (like Savannah). But they do have flooding, and while it meets the far away criteria, it fails the nearby one.
Memphis is on or next to the New Madrid seismic zone. A lot more seismically active than where you are. Nearly everywhere has something that's not so great. But I totally get wanting to temper winter.

I've done some work in Hersey which is pretty close to you. I thought it was a very nice place. I've also done work in Memphis. I didn't leave with the same impression. Maybe battery powered motion detector illumination?

Short daylight hours of the winter do not bother me. Same as Dhal22, I have lights in my shop. I also have heat. Coldest AM so far is 5 degrees

I’ve seen 5 degrees on tv before. That seems cold…..

Dave,
The pendulum swings. We slowly work our way back to too darn hot :)
Days are short for sure!!

A very nice place: it’s about a45 minutes walk from where I live.

of course you could always go old school with "The Clapper"

The easiest solution is to leave a light on when I go down to the Office or Shop!

I’m pretty sure I related this before, but maybe on a different forum: 10 or 12 years ago a colleague and I may have set a record: we left Guayaquil, Ecuador where it had been 95F on a Friday and on the following Monday were in Denver (Colorado, not the one in Pennsylvania), where it was -20F that night: 115F temperature swing within 80-ish hours.

Here in central Pennsylvania we experienced several days one Winter where the temperature didn’t go above 18F, and it got down to near -20F at night. Thankfully that doesn’t happen often.

I recall a few years ago taking a group of Taiwanese engineers to tour my lab in Grimes Iowa. (Not my choice to meet the criteria above). THey were just stunned at the morning weather, -15F. They literally had never felt anything anywhere near freezing. All they wanted to do was pose in front of the bank's outdoor digital temperature display.

You know, really, Nevada City CA is not far away from an ideal place. We have a few summertime days around 100 for a couple hours in the afternoon, maybe two snows a winter, melted off a day later. No earthquakes, hurricanes or flooding. An occasional "atmospheric river" comes along and makes what my folks would have called a few rainy days. You didn't mention fire...that's a possible issue around here, depending on specifics of the property. We've done what we can do. And just reading the news, it appears everybody is leaving California for Texas. So that's a win-win. :)
