Shipment damage

I would bring it up with eBay. They make it almost impossible,to find their phone number so I’ll post it here. 1 (866) 540-3229 Hitting zero on your dialer is the best way to get past the AI robot and talk to a real person. In my experience, eBay has bent over backwards for the buyer, not the seller. $100 is a good deal even without the box, but still. . . It’s a precision instrument that needs protection.

It was poorly packed..period.

If you can hear or feel something moving when box is shaken, it is not packed.

I have shipped glass things internationally as well as packing a glass domed anniversary clock in soft sided suitcases that flew across the country via 2 planes that did not break.

Proper packing is responsibility of seller and he failed.

Contact fowler and seek price of the new box delivered before contacting eBay.

State that the box should be replaced at sellers cost.

You provide this cost and request a simple refund for that amount.

If no deal, a bad review with comment obout the bad packing.

Yup, both really good points that I agree with.

Yup, there was about 1" of free movement long ways and only a single layer of large bubble wrap.

You think it's still available new?

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me when I purchased a Starrett No 199 on ebay. The wood box was MINT and the guy shipped it with zero packing material. The bottom of the wood box was broke out. Not damaged nearly like yours and I was able to glue it back on but that was both 100% avoidable and super annoying.

I wanted to rip into the seller but the guy was like 79 years old so I grit my teeth and said nothing. :cussing:

For me, these kind of things are a "rub of the green". Find something to level with precision and move on. Now, if the level itself was damaged, that's a different story.

You deserve to receive what was offered and agreed on. You paid an agreed price and it's the sellers responsibility to package things to protect the condition and value of what was offered. The seller failed to meet his/her responsibility for safe packaging and the purchase was substantially damaged in transit.
How much is the damage worth?
What is your time/materials worth trying to fix the damage?
What settlement will satisfy you?
Only you can answer those questions.
Make ALL your communication with the seller via the eBay processes. No communication outside of eBay.
The seller has already been irresponsible. If he/she does not agree to a satisfactory settlement your communications will be on record and you can ask eBay to resolve the issue. There's a fairly good chance you'll get a full refund and get to keep the item if the seller refuses to provide a prepaid return shipping label. It will take a couple of weeks, but you will win.
Irresponsible packaging is the bane or eBay. Leave negative feedback, regardless of your satisfaction with the final settlement. Stupid sellers deserve it and ignorant sellers need the educational experience.
Yep, that's how I really feel.

eBay NAD (NOT AS DESCRIBED) claim. End of discussion. If you want to return it for full refund (including your original shipping) seller has to pay return shipping. They can insist on this but more likely they'll offer you a "partial" (refund) and you can haggle over what that should be. If the clock runs out on that discussion eBay will step in and you'll get a full refund and get to keep item.

As others have said that damage shouldn't have occurred with careful packing. It's hard to tell from the pics what the packing was. Some sellers have no clue how to package. 2" of bubble wrap on each side (so +4" on each dimension) is the UPS/Fedex requirement else they won't pay out an insurance claim.

I don't want to send it back, it seems like it was still a good price for the tool alone. But I purchased a tool and case, so I deserve both. I'm going to request a partial refund.

No, it was not packed anywhere near well enough. Less than 1" on each side (single layer of the large bubbles) but the worst part is the 2" of free space on the long direction where it could just slide around inside the box.

No argument from me. As I said it's a solid NAD claim.

However often recommended procedure is to open a return. If the seller wants to issue you a return label they can. They can also offer you a partial. It's up to them.

If you don't want that option then you should contact the seller via eBay messaging. Some sellers prefer buyers do this.

Free space inside a box is not good.

If it wasn't packed correctly , it would be the sellers fault and a full refund would be in order . ( you would ship it back to him )
If it was packed correctly , it would be the shippers fault and a full refund would still be in order . ( you could keep it and get your refund and the seller would file a claim if shipped insured ) That would be between the two of you .

You and I as a seller can only pack items to a point . The gorillas that throw these packages off trucks and planes with no regards to the contents couldn't care less .

I see that it took 19 days to arrive , did you track it ? Where did it go ?

I went thru an adventure last year with a $1285 set of dies that USPS absolutely destroyed the box and lost half of the dies and bowls . It was tracked and insured . It took 3 times , a full 4 months , full documentation , full before and after pics , multiple conversations before I as the seller was reimbursed . The post office kept the remaining contents of the box . A 2 day priority box took 24 days to arrive , stuck in a blizzard in Illinois .

I don't ship anything over 100 bucks un-insured , and NEVER thru USPS . Pirate Ship is cheaper by far and are on top of complaints and refunds .

As far as the box , pretty easy fix . If the level is good , use it . Let the seller know about the packing issue off the record .
