So, let's say, theoretically, you purchased a Fowler machinist level on eBay.
And, again just theoretically, it showed up 19 days later in this condition.
The level appears fine, but the box is destroyed.

How bothered would you be? I'm pretty upset. Theoretically, upset...
It was $100 for what appears to be a good condition 12" (0.0005"/10") level

In theory, I would be pi$$ed off and I would be seeking compensation. Was the box theoretically damaged, or was the damage apparently present at the boxing?

I'd be stoked about getting that level for 100$ Wooden boxes can be fixed. It isn't beyond repair. The damage is the shipper's fault. If you have to, make a damage claim and get your small settlement. I wouldn't bother, myself.

Ow man , it was lucky it was in a nice protective box when they drop kicked it from the shipping hub warehouse into the van ay.

Stu

Since the cardboard is intact and without forklift tire track markings, I think the protective box protected it. Sacrificially, yes, but...

But the wood box is part of the deal- isn't it? Without the box what are you going to put it in?
Return baby, return!--

Yellow carpenters glue, an acid brish, some small clamps, elastic bands and time would see the box repaired.

Whilst waiting for it to set up, I would be on to claiming some compo from the seller who should be able to mke a claim against the shipping agent.

That does suck that the box is destroyed, but like Dabbler said, very fixable. If the level is not damaged, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Yes, I would still be a little ticked about it, but I'd let it go.

You should see the damage that happened to the carbide grinder I received last week (also purchased on the bay). I don't want to hijack your thread though.

I can see everyone has most of the same opinions I've had. ****** (edit: I didn't realize the forum sensor was so sensitive ) because the box was part of the reason I purchased it. Acknowledging that $100 is still a good deal without a box and happy that the box protected the level. And yup, I'm pretty sure I can glue it back together well enough...

What's the purpose of these plastic pieces? To keep my hand from changing the temp of the level? 2 of them too some minor damage and are no longer glued in place (all 4 are present)

The eBay listing showed a perfect box.
It's not a secret, I'm not sure why I didn't link to it earlier.
