My question is I was told that I could only use a vfd for the SB heavy 10 lathe if the motor was marked for vfd use and according to the posted picture my lathe motor seems not to be marked as such. So can I just find a 208/240v motor, same shaft size and hp to do a swap with a mounting plate adapter? I will only be turning home projects and fun stuff. Nothing technical, for sale or complicated. Can't seem to find much info on 240v 186 frame motors either. 1000015088.jpg

Yes, you can run that with a vfd.

For hobby use, it will be fine!

Commercial use may not, but hobby use is short periods of less than full load operation.

Your motor is rated continious duty, so better built.
You may not be able to use higher speeds but you should be fine.

Worst case is at some point you MAY Cook the motor, then buy vfd rated, otherwise, just add good vfd and use it.

All good news so far, and I really don't have much to lose but the motor that can be upgraded. Thanks

The motor should be fine for vfd service. Operation in the 30Hz to 90 Hz envelope is not excessively detrimental to the motor.

If you’re thinking of an upgrade ponder the question.
Does it have a 7/8” shaft or a 1-1/8” shaft?

If you were so inclined, you could use a 56HZ or 143T frame motor as a replacement for a 7/8” shaft. They are available up to 3hp
The 182T or the 184T would be the replacement for the 1-1/8” shaft. I see them up to 10Hp.
1725 is the nominal speed for most machine tools, regardless of frame dimensions

Move it with your brains, not muscle....

If you have any questions post them up here
