One of the projects that I would like to do at some point is make a dovetail (rimfire 3/8 type) for an older variant of the new (modern Miroku mfg) Winchester Low wall 22 lr. Don't like any of the commercial mount options, or their price tags. It's a flat taper octagon barrel mated to a round top action.

I am totally new to machinist tools and techniques. What would the proper cutter be, techniques, etc. (feel free to refer me to other threads or even external links). Thanks in advance

Why are you wanting a 3/8 dovetail? Are you mounting a scope? If so, drill and tap for scope mounts. Much stronger than a dovetail and far more rigid. You can probably find mounts with a close radius to the receiver , or you could use a black bedding compound to fill in the radii if necessary.

A standard .22 (or airgun) dovetail is 11mm or 3/8" wide and has a 60* groove cut in either side. Depth is whatever you feel right, around 50-75 thou probably.
