I’m sure this comes up a lot but for standard tooling what do people prefer for turning? As in what style insert? I kind of understand inserts but I find it hard to search for their holders. I already have some CC** style inserts for a boring bar. Which I believe would be 80* diamond with 7* rake? Do these work well for normal turning? I have normal and ground ones on hand.

If these are good can you recommend a 1/2 shank tool holder? I’m having a hard time searching for one that fits that insert.

I have a variety of different styles of inserts, but have been switching to the CCxT style for turning and boring. I prefer the CCxT style since it can do turning and facing with the same toolholder. The holder you are looking for is an SCLCR08, the 08 indicates a 1/2” shank.

I have purchased some items from Curtis at Latheinserts.com. The toolholders are Chinese, but good quality, and he personally uses everything he sells. The inserts he sells are good too, but for CCGT inserts, I have been very happy with Korloy. Here is the toolholder I have:

To get familiar with toolholder styles, you can download a tooling catalog from any of the major vendors. The Dorian catalog is too big to attach here, you can view it here: https://www.doriantool.com/catalogs/ The turning and boring catalog shows all the different holders they sell, the part numbers are standardized across vendors for the most part, so an SCLCR holder from one vendor, should be the same at another one. One difference you might find, the screws holding the inserts for the Chinese holders are one size smaller than the western brands. I haven’t found that to be an issue, but for someone that wants to keep spare screws on hand might not like that.

I use CCMT and DCMT inserts for steel and the GT inserts for aluminum and even steel sometimes.

Just get a set of these

I have bought a LOT of this type of tooling, it has all been of good quality.
I also have a lot of this stuff and agree it's a good place to start, it's where I started and probably where a lot of us start. Lately I have been buying holders that use TNMG inserts though, as I get more bang for my buck.

I like the equilateral triangle inserts over the diamond shape inserts because you get 3 cutting points on one insert instead of 2. And I like TNMG over TCMT because the relief is built into the tool holder instead of the insert; the insert itself has a point that is perpendicular to the top face. So the bottom is identical to the top, meaning you can flip the insert over and you have an additional 3 points to use. 6 pokey bits for the price of 3.

What about threading inserts and holders? They seem kind of expensive. I don’t thread often. Should I just stick to a 60* hss tool bit? The last one I made had top rakes(or relief I can’t ever remember the term). I use the compound to advance. Since then I’ve seen that people use a 0 degree top rakes due to cutting on both sides. Is this recommended? Seems like if you use the compound it wouldn’t be required right?

The angle looks like a LH tool. Is it? I feel like I would want a RH tool for normal threading right? It’s hard to tell the insert looks like it might be at an angle that works with that holder with normal threading.
