So I have this shaded pole motor, and I thought about using it for a demagnitizer.
well hooked up a cord to it and it vibrated like crazy and got very hot, and smelly.
Why? Aren't these doing the same when a rotor is in it, or does the rotor help remove the heat? What's going on.

Shaded pole motors generally do get pretty hot- not sure how much the rotor contributes or subtracts.
Also, demagnetizers usually can only be run for short periods without overheating- you could put a large resistor in series
like about 50-100 ohms at about 25 watts to cut the current
