Hi Folks,

I finally had my Slate & Copper roof replaced and while doing so decided to add 3 roof vent turbines on the standing seam Copper roof. Because they were to attach to the copper roof I did not want to use Al or steel turbines. I searched for copper turbines without success. I finally found some 304 stainless steel one, but they come from China. So there was a long wait due to shipping. Of course as you might expect they were less expensive that the non-stainless steel versions I could get in the US. We agreed to buy the 300mm diameter (11.8") version and so the roofer built the copper vent pipes at 11.5" in diameter. We figured the turbines would just fit and over the pipes, but we had to wait several weeks for the turbines to arrive. We built into the vents some threaded copper bars on the inside of the pipes to act as nuts for the attachment of the turbines. Long after the roofers finished and left the turbines arrived. As you might expect, even though they were advertised as being fully built turbines they arrived as a kit with no instructions for assembly. The parts were also a bit beat up in shipping. Nevertheless, I figured them out and I constructed one to see how they would work. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CY4JJ654?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

No. The final diameter was not 11.8", it was only about 11.3 and so it would not fit the roof vent pipes. If they were fit inside the vent pipes then water would run into the attic. There was no way to change the Vents without totally messing them up and I was not about to do that. So after considerable time thinking about this I decided to rebuilt the turbines to the 11.8 inch diameter. That meant that the ring that clamped to the roof vent pipe had to be enlarged by 0.5" diameter. Likewise the ring portion of the turbine that rotated needed to be made larger as well. The assembly of these things involved lots of thin formed SS sheet meta wind vanes with punched pop rivet holes which had to match to the holes in the mating support rings and top cap. So I purchased some 0.014" 304 SS sheet and started cutting and punching. Of course the one that I had assembled I had to take apart!

So here is the deal. I learned that my various tin snips really were not very good and left lots of burrs and bends in the cutting process. I have a good Roper-Whitney hand punch and so while punching a lot of holes in the stainless was not painless it was viable. But for the future I want to get some good tin snips. My roofers had Stubai snips which seemed to make nice clean cuts in the 20Oz Copper with virtually no burr. So I am thinking about getting a set three of these (left, right, straight), but they are bit expensive given that I use them so seldom... and there are few suppliers. https://www.stortz.com/product/prem...bK5dytZHbkqblCOt7DGPTfEr0GUak#reviews_tab_pro

My question is has anyone had experience with these Stubai Snips and if so can you compare them to less expensive snips which are AS good and durable?

Thanks

I'm ordering the Stubai (thanks for the link!). I've played with several brands of cutters, from worthless to nearly-satisfactory. If there's a good set to be had, I want them!

Thanks Gene,
Since you have tried several, with limited success, maybe I should just proceed with these.!!
