POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

I cut up and resawed some walnut to make a couple small drink holding shelves that hook to the arms of a steel frame outdoor sofa, but I digress. There were two subgoals so far...first, my Laguna bandsaw has always been a bit of a disappointment in that it has a huge drift angle, bigger than the adjustable fence can compensate for. So there was a post and a video about how to align your saw, and that any drift just means it's not set up correctly. I went through that process outlined therein, and yes, it made a big difference. Not perfect, maybe it's me, maybe it's the blade, but I could pretty accurately resaw a 10" high piece into two equal bookmatched halves. Then, I needed to put a small rim on the shelves so I used the mill...it's turning into my best woodworking tool, it seems. That's the point of this post...woodworking on metal equipment is pretty attractive. I just put an old sheet over the vise and table so cleanup was easy.

Learn as you go and what better way to learn by making things that make life easier around the shop.

We all know what they are.

Just another vice stop..

The most needed tools and I would put them down and forget where they were..

Made this rack to keep my chunk handy and it worked out perfectly.

Not the best but it was free and I made it and I can cut a nice V now....

I also made a bit of a mess but I'm really enjoying this and what I will be able to make with my lathe and mill once I learn more and build the skills I will need to do it the right way..
Tammy, one thing. That's a bad place for your drill chuck unless you have a cover for it. That chuck will get a ton of chips inside it and mess you up when you don't realize that your drill is not as true as it can be.
My suggestion would be to put it up high where your collets are. if you have a lesser used collet, store it in a drawer for when you need it if you need the spot for the drill chuck.

Otherwise, nice work.

The sheet is a nice trick! I'll keep that in mind.

The only thing about wood on the metal equipment is that occasional errant oil drip... really annoying!

That’s some nice looking walnut! Air dried? Betcha that’s going have a really nice look when it’s finished.
Yes, air dried. It was a 2' diameter slab that I faced on both sides to about 3" thick a couple years ago...took that long to decide what to do with it, and finally decided to cut it up into some smaller pieces. I agree, I think the grain is pretty dang impressive. I'll post a picture when it's complete.

Beautiful wood - please share after it's finished (& done :) )

I'll post a picture when it's complete.
Looking forward to that. We don’t get a lot of walnut around here but there’s a few trees here and there. A really big one came down just out of town about 30 years ago so I rushed out and brought home what I could fit in the back of the Vega! This is one of the bowls I still have from it.

Today, I was working in the shop and noticed staining coming back on my mill table from hand-applying castor oil. I stopped using it when I noticed it stained, and scrubbed it clean with fluid film. A few months later and no more castor oil, but the stains crept back. So I forgot about what I was doing and gave the table a going over. My fitbit called it 20 minutes of cardio.PXL_20230709_203015727.jpg

Do you like your American Rotary Phase converter? I have a Phase-o-Matic. I want to upgrade eventually.

Cutting oil is my blood.

And a fine looking mill it is! What type of pad did you use to apply the fluid film?
