POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Nice work, is the tool made from a wood dowel?
The main body is aluminum. This is the thread on its construction.

@BGHansen
I don't remember seeing your spring winder tooling before but it's linked to my "Project Ideas" list now.
Thanks Bruce.
Here's the thread. It's come in handy though I'm hoping my wife doesn't have a lot more coworkers in need of springs! I've got my own crap to work on!

I was going to say in my post above regarding the RH wind or LH wind that direction didn't matter; this is NOT always the case. I reread my post below; I'd forgotten a problem I had with that project. In that case, the wound spring went over a screw which had a RH thread. IF the spring is riding over a thread, it must be wound in the opposite direction or the coils will catch the threads of the fastener as the spring compresses/extends.

Nice spring system. Thanks.

Where do you get your music wire?
I normally buy it off eBay, usually wait for a good price. I was off on the price for the 0.041" wire - it was $11.50 for 223 feet delivered. All of my rolls are the Precision Brand which is sold in 1/4 lb. or 1 lbs. lengths (note the difference in weight/length when price shopping). Amazon sells it too for around $25 for a pound.

Hey, I'm not going to give you any grief for that- it's a self-correcting problem, really.
Very true, lived long enough to have learned many lessons the hard way!
@DeadGuyAle
I've been accused of being a safety Gestapo before . . . but not in this case.
I see the carriage sitting fully on the bench top, not teetering whatsoever.
From what I've read, you seem to be at least a reasonably competent individual.
I have no reason to assume other than you stepped back into the shop to snap a couple of pics.
Footwear type optional.
Please don't let the safety reminders deter you from continuing to post updates on your project(s).
Keep an eye out for a pair of giant clown shoes.
My shop. My toes. My risk. My choice.
As you said my shop my risk. I also own motorcycles, raced professional motocross, take small boats miles offshore in the graveyard of the pacific ocean and venture unescorted up into nowhere Alaska from time to time.
Won't be booking a tour of the Titanic anytime soon.
No problem being reminded of safe practices.
Them clown shoes could be the answer, plenty roomy for my big feet
Thanks for the support

Just enjoy your hobby. Forget all the comments. If you forget something , it is your life. I can’t throw any stones. You will figure it out in the end with out any of our help.
Comments don't bother me, same folks will be fielding my new to the hobby questions so it's all good.
Need to get to a point where I'm actually using and learning as opposed to disassembly and learning. Either way the journey is enjoyable and provides me with some Zen time.

But not as tough as those toes..... ;)
So tough a cat can't scratch em and a dog can't bite em, smell might factor in that though :big grin:

Clausing came through with a new worm and bearing which is really good news.

Discontinued on the bushing so will need work through the options to deal with it.
Removal and install of the back "bearing" will need some contemplation and planning

If you have the part number for the bearings. Call Clausing if they have the prints for them. They will email them to you.

Cutting oil is my blood.

Clausing support is second to none. Tolerate and answer my questions, assisting with parts orders and never failed to deliver on what they say.
Had the print in a matter of minutes after talking with technical support.

Believe the date is 11/15/66, almost as old as I am.
If only I had a spare $22K laying around would have their 13x25 lathe sitting in the garage :D

Seems easy enough to make those.
