POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

(not the "precision" setup squares I had bought at Woodcraft).
Lol. One of my "precision' squares that needs fixing came from a woodcraft! lol

Serious machinists or those seeking Stefan Gotteswinter accuracy start seeking accuracy in tenths.
Check
That's when they start scanning Craigslist for surface grinders, taking Richard King's scraping classes
Check
, and upgrading their indicators, surface plates, and so on.
Check
Some go further, seeking accuracy in millionths (or microns). A micron is 40 millionths.
Check
And I would have to buy an optical flat and learn how to make laps.
Che... Uh-oh...I think I have a problem.

@Nutfarmer
Yeah, I gravitate towards being a tool maker. It's just in my nature to think this way.
Unfortunately, a drug addiction might be cheaper...

Today i did some maintenance on my daily driver. Of course i've got a screw in my tire, got the tire off my car, break the bead repair it. I have one more kilometer till i have to do an oil change. I'll do it next week, this car takes the abuse like a champ.

I needed some brass/bronze shims approx 0.2mm thick with 12mm i/d and 16mm o/d.
My first attempt with sheet brass and a punch was a dismal failure.
My second attempt with scissors worked but was awful.
Then I remembered I had a short length of bronze bearing with those exact measurements.
Hmm, part off some thin rings.
It worked but left a huge flange on the i/d
Next thought- fill the bearing with something hard so the material under the tool bit wont push inwards.
Success, it worked.
I used a 12mm endmill that the bearing material gripped once the chuck was tightened.
Here I've cut 4 shims that stayed in place once the parting tool cut through but easily slid off the end mill.

heres the 4 good ones a two flanged ones, the large flanges were a total pain to clean up but the four just needed a slight touch up with a round fine file.
They worked perfect.

Another method to make precise shims....

Turning precision shims...

.002 / .005 / .010 brass shims lathe turned with +/- 0.001" OD and ID
Scissor cut rough circles to fit left end of gadget, screw cap on to clamp
Bore shim ID
Fit bored shims over stub on right end of gadget, secure with clamp lid and SHC
Turn gadget and shims to OD

I've also used this method with sintered metal filter material to prevent spalling.

Man, you are a lot more careful than me. I go by seasons.
Not always, but now with 3 registered cars and access to 15 more, if it needs service i'll leave it at home and when i came from work next day i'll fix it. That is what i did, today after work i stopped by bought me some oil and a filter. Replaced it, wiped down some of the leaking oil check the undercarriage got it ready for driving to work tomorrow. The engine is a french 12 valve, Diesel because of that the oil is so black, i change it every 7000 km.

They’re not done yet but these will be knives for a machine that makes wood dowels. The machine spins 4 of these to whittle down 1-1/2” square stock to whatever size they adjust the machine to.
