Lets say I want to make some tool holders for my axa toolpost, and I already have one to compare to. Where do I measure the dovetail , so that I know what size cutter to get. PS, I know (or I think), from reading other posts, that its a 60* dovetail, but they come in sizes from 3/8" to 2 1/4" this is the size I need help with. Thanks, JR49

A 3/4 or 1in would probably do it, but measure the depth of the dovetail and compare that to the cutters dimensions you should be able to look on MSc that will give all the di

I also have a few dovetails to cut in the future. What diameter are the 'wires' or rods used in such a measurement, and
how do you decide what size to use for different sizes and angles?

Anyone know of any good Videos or something to reference on this, I also am looking at needing to cut a few dovetails in the near future. I figure better to have fun and learn making my own stuff than paying for what someone else did. Plus this way I can customize as I want.

Hi
A 60* x 3/4 will work for the AXA holders but you are at the limit of the cutter, a 1" cutter is best for this size holder. A cutter from grizzly is $ 19.00 + -.
For the BXA you need a 1"min. a 1-3/8 will work. hope this helps.

The diameter of rod you want is to make contact below the tit where the angle meets the horizontal, any size that meets that criteria will work, it needs to be up against the angle wall and stick out past the point

This is what I use for AXA size.

Hey roadie33,

One vital piece of info is missing from your drawing.....

What's the diameter of the rods in your drawing in post #2?

Thanks,
