Ordered a 6 Jaw Lathe Chuck

They guarantee straightness within .002" per foot. The one foot piece I bought is well within a tenth or two. I can't measure any runout with it in a pair of precision vee blocks and a tenth reading indicator.

Just so happens, I made the one shown in the photos. Do yourself a favor any pay 20 bucks for one at speedy metals. I spent a long time making that thing.

Thanks for posting this thread! Now I only have to figure out a way to get them to ship it to Canada! (On Amazon, Canada is not an acceptable destination).

Does anyone have any solutions for this that doesn't double the price of the chuck?

FYI: All this time, I forgot to mention that both of these chucks (6 & 8") required no balancing. I've used both chucks at all available speeds up to 1800 RPM and there's no perceptible vibration from either of them. The piece below was 4" diameter and held in the 8" chuck. The 1/2 hole needed to be bored with a boring bar and RPMs were brought to 1800. Even with the jaws extended a good bit, it ran smooth as silk.



I will say though, all those jaws kick-up a good breeze at high RPM.

A Mcpherson strut from a scrap yard is what I use. It is .787'' in diameter and has a very hard surface.
