Working On It Number (qty of new alerts) not displaying

Just a sliver of additional evidence I just noticed. I opened H-M and as my browser was loading the page I was looking at the Alert (bell) icon and noticed that a "1" appeared for an instant, then disappeared. I hadn't done anything with the mouse or keyboard, just watching the display. When I selected the Alerts icon, there was one new Alert.

Never seen this before, but it places the problem clearly in the WTF? category. I loaded H-M and there was no new Alert quantity number displayed. I selected the Alert icon and there was one new alert. OK, I'm not shocked. I then select the new Alert and read the new reply. Then I selected my browser "back" arrow to get back to my front page, intending to scan new posts. The screen refreshed
, but now there is a number 1 displayed indicating a new Alert. So, I select the Alert icon and there are zero new alerts. Top of the list (not highlighted) in the alert for the new post I just read. I'm not making this up, honest.

FWIW . My alerts work and then don't work . Nothing alerts me to responses or quote messages . I found a thread from 5 days ago mentioning me more than once . It's hard to pin down @extropic and I feel your pain .

My pain is past. I'm accustomed to it now and check for new Alerts regardless of the number display. I'm just trying to contribute evidence in the hope it will help someone locate and choke the life out of whatever is causing the anomaly. life goes on.

I've found that refreshing the site yields no results but clicking Forums updates alerts . It was never this way in the past . I get around it also so no biggie .
