New to Eyeglasses, got a question.

I have been having problems with vertigo
I feel very bad for you. Vertigo is very scary.

I'm 67. Never had vertigo until about a month ago. Walking the dog, looked up and back at a flock of geese coming in for the winter. All of a sudden -Bam. I couldn't walk. It cleared up in about ten minutes, nothing since.
Do you have the vertigo that is caused by the crystals in your inner ear that have to be reset?

This is what my physical therapist said it probably was. She had me go through the "reset" moves, nothing happened.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common inner ear disorder that causes brief, repeated episodes of vertigo, or a spinning sensation, when you move your head

My first were progressive lenses . Couldn't see straight and was constantly dizzy as hell . Took them back and bought bi-focals and never had issues since . I wore safety glasses that were trifolds for years which didn't bother me either . Only the progressives and will never go back to them .

couldn't focus on an object without having to move my head up and down to find the sweet spot,
They take some getting use to.
Being able to see is pretty cool. Having one pair was great until recently. Now I have to have close ups too.
Thank goodness we are living in an age where there is a solution to super blurry vision.
I've been wearing glasses since I was 14.

I've been wearing glasses for the last 55 years and probably progressives for the last 10 or more. They have never caused vertigo. I had a bad case of vertigo a few years ago, it was caused by an inner ear various. I also had a spell about month ago but it only lasted for a short time. At the time my neck was really bothering me. I couple trip to my chiropractor and I haven't had another problem.

Good luck, I hope it clears up soon. As someone else said lots of things can cause vertigo.

I’ve been wearing glasses for the past 40 years or so (now 62) and progressives for the last 15 or 20. I’ve not had trouble adjusting to new pairs, even the first ones, but I also don’t have a very strong prescription which I think probably makes it easier. From what you describe I would definitely go back to your provider or doctor and at least have them verify that the new pair was made correctly and that they adjusted them to sit on your head properly. Believe it or not, even subtle changes in how and where they rest on your face can make a noticeable difference.

It’s really too bad that you’re starting with the prescription lenses at the same time you’re having troubles with the vertigo. Makes trying to figure out what’s going on even more difficult. Good luck.

Going back is going to have to wait until after Christmas. My wife is up at my son's helping my DIL who goes for surgery tomorrow. Carpal tunnel, procedure, second one. I can't drive right now, and she probably won't be back until Monday.

Thanks everyone... or the one's that correctly read that I had vertigo first, glasses second... sheesh... I know, I am guilty of misreading too.

I didn't need glasses until about 10 years ago, and then had to start using "readers". I have slowly been increasing the power, had a couple different strengths for different uses. Finally got to the point where I was wearing them more than not, so a few months ago I went in an got full time glasses.

I went with progressives, and thought it was interesting all the warnings they gave on the different options. Reading through this thread I can see those warning are very much in play for some and not an issue for others. Luckily all I got from my adjustment period was a mild headache for a day or two as my eyes got used to their new style.

Being able to see is pretty cool.

Agree. I never needed glasses and had very good vision for working on small things up close, so having to start relying on vision aids was a bummer, but nice that we have the technology to adjust. 100 years ago I'd be having to make lifestyle changes much bigger than wearing glasses. Of course back then it was quite an achievement just making it to 50. ;)

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Glasses have been around for longer than you think. Ben Franklin...
I believe for one thousand years.. So while most did not have access, it's been available.

I have been having problems with vertigo, so went to the DR because it's not going away. I am having problems with my vision, and they told me to go see my eye DR.
Well got the glasses, and things have been sharper, but still a little weird. Peripheral non existent, seeing clearly outside even the the center of my viewing area is off. Been wearing them almost a week.
The past 2 days have been worse vertigo wise, I was getting a little better, then bam.
Today my vision went total FUBAR, can't see without the glasses, and am having more problems than the previous days with the glasses.

Since I am new to glasses, is this a normal thing? When you got glasses, did you find it difficult at first to get used to them?
It took me 3 tries to nail down my readers as the fitter would not listen to what I actually wanted vs what they normally force on people.

For readers I need my focal length set at 18-20” and they dont seem to want to give you this over 12-14” that they consider standard.

As far as distance, eh, I do without for now as they mess with my depth perception.
