Need some advise please

The wedge type systems are always better than the piston types. Wedge types cost more. If you have budget restrictions and must buy a piston type,at least buy a steel one.

I heard that Vince.

Pehaps I am going against the grain of this thread so far, but I did order one of those for my Atlas 618, after years of frigging around with the rocker tool post. I am very happy with it so far.. have had it for about 1 year. Now I mainly make small stuff for clocks that I repair and work mainly with brass and aluminum. I think it all depends on what type of work you are doing. But so far for me, I am very happy.

Hey Vince

I own an Atlas 618 as well. I know now that Wedge style is better, and steel is better.

BUT I got one of these QCTP's from A2Z years ago, (and a bunch of other A2Z stuff) and it has all been great.

That T 4 Cheap post looks pretty nice, and IS steel and wedge. Pretty good for $125, if it is good.

Another option that is hard to find is the Sherline QCTP. I got one on EBay once, and adapted the A2Z holders to it. Solid steel, totally heavy!

Vince,
Tools4cheap is a good place to deal with. The guy who owns it ( Jeff ) is good to deal with and very quick on shipping. I've gotten a number of things from him and have been happy every time.

Do you really want to spend more money on the 6" Atlas? You might be better saving for a bit and upgrading to a better lathe ( either a bigger Atlas or a sturdier lathe)

I hear ya thats for sure. I think Super Dave has an eye open for me on a bigger lathe, some type of Monarch??? All I know is that hes been on me to make the shop bigger and hurry with the concreate. He was sposta do some work here in the carolinas and Ga areas but I think they turned him around. also something another cubber wanted wouldnt fit on the trailer. So for now I do want to make this lathe as right as possable. To date I only have about 200 to 250 in it.

Im not opposed to the lantern style except that mine is worn really good. Is there a lantern tool post I could get with toolong to hold 1/4 cutters? Thats what Im really shooting for in the long run.

Like would the tool post for a 10 inch fit on my 6 inch? Then I could use the 1/4 tooling and holders in it.

Also with the posts they say Ill have to machine something to make it fit. Do I do this with my lathe or do I need to do something else to make them work.

Oh I get so confused so easly LOL

Even a small monarch will be light years ahead of your Atlas. ( difference between hobby and commercial machines)

Another option for using your lantern style tool post. If the tool bits are long enough, you can stack other tool bits under the tool bit you're using to get center height.

See what I did here with stacking other tool bits under the actual cutting tool?

I had that A2Z on my 7x12 lathe. Not bad, fairly repeatable, but I decided after a while that I do not like the design of the piston type holders. Still, quality was good, and I got a lot if work done with it before I sold it off with my old lathe.

I have an 0XA on my Atlas 618, and have been very happy with it. Extra toolholders are plentiful and cheap. In this case, I don't think steel costs much more than aluminum, especially if you intend to get a bunch of toolholders to go with the toolpost.

I suspect AXA would be too large for a 6" lathe (correct me if I'm wrong).
