Need a gantry crane for a one time use.

I'm thinking this rock might pay for itself over time.
Rig up a trail cam somehow so that it takes a photo if it gets bumped.
Then when someone hits it, you'll have evidence and can put a claim in on their insurance company for damage to your rock - say a couple Hundred $ each time it happens.
There’s a whole YouTube channel devoted to semis trying to pass under a low overpass, and the resultant carnage. Something to think about!

Glad we could help:laughing::laughing:

Actually there were things learned from this thread (at least by me) so there was help given and received.

That channel is the wife's very favorite place to go on YouTube.

Due to the very low speeds involved around my rock, there will not be any spectacular footage to be had.
But getting outdoor cameras is on my short list of upcoming projects. But that will be another thread and another learning experience.

Here's my make-shift gantry crane:

It is mostly built from on-site materials. The I-beam is two 20 feet C-channels welded together. To transport the C-channels, I had them cut into 13 and 7 feet lengths. This made them somewhat legal to pickup transport. I only need a 2000 pound capacity. If I needed more, I would beef up the top log and increase the size of the I-beam. I built and placed everything by myself (with a LOT of help from my BIG DOG excavator!).

Once again, I really want to apologise for previously polluting the thread with my 'hand-wringing' that turned out to be completely unnecessary and irrelevant. Every time I see an update to this thread a spike of guilt runs through my head! :oops:

Now I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the pictures of this rock in place. ;)

When you post pictures, could you have something in the pictures for scale (no, not a banana!:grin:)?

Once the new rock is in place I will post pics. Probably with the front of my truck for scale.
Yea I had nothing handy to use for scale when I took the pics of the rock at the quarry.
My current rock does have my truck in the background for scale of that rock in pics I posted a while back.

Last night someone hit my "little" 500 lb rock AGAIN and moved it over a foot. They left black rubbings on the rock, I am not sure if it is chunks of tire or black bumper. This weekend I plan to move the current 500lb rock from the back yard to the front yard. to add it to the other 3 rocks that are currently in the front yard. This will make room for the new rock next week. (OK I will try to remember to take pics of the move.)
Plan is to pick it up with the 2 ton shop crane and just push it down the alley to the new location and set it on top of the current rock pile.
