My new Sheldon has landed and I have many questions!

I have the same mark. I had asked about it and it was thought that it was an inspector mark i believe

Cut outs on ends only. What serial number is yours. Inspection marks? This box bottom only has room for 2 chucks.

headstock was sewqm 56 tailstock is s6911

The flaming bomb is a military ordnance mark. Many Sheldons were used by the military, so it make sense.

On the Sheldon group page there have been quite a few lathes with Ordnance Dept cartouches on the...some the flaming bomb, some the crossed canons with flames, etc. I'm just going off memory, but I don't think most of them had a war tag, although that is something that could fall off, get removed, etc through the years.

look for 2 tiny pin holes in the cast iron of the headstock at the bottom without looking about 3 inched apart and 2 inches above the quick change gear box
