Am i the only one who finds quick change tool posts far from quick change. Unless you got dozzens of holders you always seam to be getting out wrenches and changing out tools. then you chip an end and here you go again. Well My new quick change tool post does not use tool holders. It quickly changes the bits without a holder. And i can go from cutting, change the bit, set the height, and start cutting again in 30 seconds. I am including a few pictures. Anyone seen one like this before.Copy of exploded view.jpgCopy of IMG_6575.jpgCopy of IMG_6576.jpg

That is nice! You are right, you can never have enough holders to avoid having to change the tools anyway.

Thats kinda a neat idea. Only problem I foresee is you cant adjust for tool overhang on deep and shallow work.

Cheers Phil

Hi Mike,
Great design, hope you have patented it or they will be cranking them out by the thousand in Shanghai this time next week.

Martin

Wow, that is an awesome design! I second the patent suggestion, you have something unique here and potentially worth a lot of money!

I do not think it will ever be made commercially, because it must be made to fit your particular lathe. But i think it could be the kind of thing a hobby machinist could really use. And you are right it will not stick a bit way out for a deep spot. It's big advantage is that all you need to use the thing is a wrench and a 6 inch ruler. you loosen the nut one half turn and the block can be moved around on the slide without loosing center height. a strong spring in the tower holds the bit in place. If you want to change a bit, you just loosen the nut one half turn. Then push down on the lever and the bit is totally free to come out and be replaced. You install the bit just a little above center, and then pinch the ruler between the bit and the work. The ruler should be pushed over some. then slowly run the slide in
and the ruler will automatically come up to vertical,as the bit is pushed back and down. clamp the nut and you are ready to go.

Mike,

Cool tool holder and shows your talent. Nice job.

I'm curious as to why you designed it so the bit is sloped instead of horizontal? The downside to the design as I see it is the height needs to be adjusted every time you change bits and/or change how much of the bit sticks out.

But I like your thinking outside the box!

Steve
