My "new" American Tool Works Lathe

Well, the more I get into this, the more I find out I did not know what I was getting into.............Well, I'm stuck with it, I'll make the best of it.

This one will be a large investment of time.
Slow and steady you can win the race....and have an amazing lathe when you're done.

I made some progress yesterday, took the tool post apart, cleaned it and the compound, oiled and reassembled. Tool is staying put now.

People who buy old beaters like that, you have to enjoy the restoration process, getting it working, solving problems at not too much cost. Can be highly frustrating at times, but you'll know that machine inside and out by the time you're done. Show photos of your progress if you can.

Haa, you mean a glutton for punishment? ;) Fortunately I do have patience, and I don't mind wrenching; I've done a many basket case car, truck, and motorcycle. I knew this lathe was going to need repair; but due to my lack of knowledge I didn't realize the extent of the project. Seller sure didn't volunteer the issues any. But I'll keep at it, already learned quite a bit, I think.

I did take a few photos, but until I add some light to that corner of the garage they're not going to be the clearest.

In its new home in my garage. Putting it there displaced a lot of clutter so I have a lot of garage rearranging to do:

Oiler: (You can see that incorrect cap bolt in the lower left.)

Compound repair, it was broken or cracked in the right side angle. It's brazed together, looks okay:

Anyone know what this vise-clamp contraption is? (The mandrel(?) isn't part of it, it's just behind the vise-clamp in the picture.)

That could be, the guy I got the lathe from said the PO he got it from did some milling on it, that was the reason for this:

Guess I'll have to contemplate it more to figure out what he was doing...

Never seen an all-thread milling arbor before. A bit different.
