Here are 3 pictures of the back side of Polish Set Tru 5C collet chucks:

To add to the confusion, they sell non-Set Tru chucks that are designed to mate to a Set Tru adapter plate. Indeed, I may have pictured such a chuck in Post #31 above.

In any case, I think that a non-Set Tru plain back chuck only has a shallow female registration surface.

A Set Tru plain back chuck, however, has the much deeper female surface which fits over the boss (with or without another female surface for the shallow registration).

Last night I attempted to remove my non-Set Tru 5C collet chuck from it’s D1-6 adapter plate. Long story short, I would need to use a hydraulic press or similar to get it off.

I have a hydraulic press, but I did not move forward with the chuck removal because I could see that the adapter plate that it is mounted to does not have a boss for a Set Tru chuck.

In other words, I see no reason to dissemble this chuck/backplate assembly. I am abandoning my plan to get a Set Tru 5C collet chuck for my big lathe.

I will be happy with what I have because I don’t feel like buying a new adapter, and then selling the old one.
