I frequent the local flea market here in Ashtabula County Ohio. A guy who I've been buying stuff from for years is moving cross country.

He had a Mitutoyo test indicator on the table for $200. I looked at it but I didn't really need it and I didn't have that kind of money to spend, and I told him that I couldn't justify it right now.... He said he knew I'd use it and gave it to me for $20. I told him it was worth way more but he insisted.

I really didn't have much money to spend so it was extremely appreciated.

Anway...I've never seen a Mitutoyo Universal indicator, 513 series. The bottom part that holds the stylus rotates 180⁰ and can measure at any angle. The rules of sine error still apply, but that has to do with the lever angle to the body and not the rotational direction.

Apparently these are over $400 new. Crazy.

I got mine for a decent price but wow, that's unbelievable, one heck of a steal! I have a newer generation, I pretty much never use it but still I won't sell it.

I was thinking this thing would be pretty awesome dialing in stuff on the lathe. The little stem is lost. The big stem would fit in my boring bar holder with the face toward me and the stylus facing 9 o'clock.

just be careful. tons of counterfeit copies out there.

Jump on Google and search this indicator and see how many listings there are. China counterfeits things they can sell tens of thousands of. This particular indicator isn't remotely common and quite expensive.

"Tons of counterfeit copies out there" is for Mitutoyo in general. You don't have to worry about these, I'm 99.999% sure yours is real. As you pointed out, these aren't common/popular. Counterfeiters don't work that way, as you said, they won't go through the trouble of counterfeiting items that aren't popular sellers. I highlyy doubt they would ever consider counterfeiting this model.

Here are some of the times I used mine, probably not very many times more. The first photo was just a test & pointless really, a standard DTI would have worked the same. I was just testing it to see how well it repeated with the stylus rotated various positions. All the other times were really "just cause I can".

When I learned about them I had to have one & when a good price for one popped up I couldn't resist. I could definitely live without it, I rarely use it but again I will never sell it.
