I picked up a Mitutoyo digital micrometer, #293-722-10 and it is the screwy'ist thing I've ever used. Additionally, I cannot find any user info anywhere.
I cannot reset to zero the ORGIN, scrolling the thimble to zero, the digital display reads 0.000 and not 1.000.
No amount of button pushing gets me to where I want to be, and luck be with you if you accidently touch a button... I have just been using it in the old traditional way...probably better off but I'd like to understand it...LOL

ANY help is appreciated

Things like that don't happen with non-digital measurement devices.
Plus, non-digital measurement devices will still work after your son hands it down to his son's son.

Is there anything useful here...? The link should take you straight to the series 293 mic's.

Thanks for the replies. Screw the digital side of this mic, all it does is frustrate me. It's still got a thimble...can't go wrong there...LOL

I don't own anymore of those generation Mitu digital mics so my memory is fuzzy.....

First off, you need a 1" standard to set "zero"(1.0") on a 1-2" mic. If you don't have one I suppose you could go by the vernier scale but you really should use a standard. With a 1" standard between the anvil/spindle, press & hold the "Origin" button until a "P" appears in the display & starts flashing, then let go. Don't move the spindle/thimble, does the display read 1.0000"? If yes press the "Origin" again, the "P" should disappear & "zero"(1.0") is now set. Done.

If when holding the "Origin" button until the "P" starts flashing, if it reads 0.0000 instead of 1.0000, try this.... Although I don't think this model should function this way since it has an "Origin" button instead a "Preset" button. This proceedure is for Mitu mics like inside, depth, etc, that have a "Preset" button but if yours says 0.0000 instead of 1.0000 try it.

Again with a 1" standard between the anvil/spindle, press & hold the "Origin" button until the "P" starts flashing but this time do not let go, continue holding until the display 0.0000 reading starts flashing but only "0." will flash if yours does function this way. If it does start flashing, let go of the "Origin" button. Then press the "Origin" button again, the flashing "0." Should advance to "1." Once it reads 1.0000, press & hold the "Origin" button again until it cycles through all the digits (after the decimal), after that you should see the "P" start flashing & the numbers stop flashing. Press the "Origin" button again & then it should be set.

FYI, this Preset function on Mitu mics that have it allows the user to set an incremental value as "absolute" instead of the default/actual measurement if they want & is why you can change to a custom value when "zeroing".

If you're wanting precision set your mic with a 1 inch gauge block. "Standards" usually aren't accurate.

Agreed but not everyone owns a gauge block set. 1-2" & larger mics usually come with standards so that's what I recommended for simplicity. If the OP has gauge blocks then even better but the OP's problem is trying to figure out how to even get his digital mic set. Until he figures that out gauge block vs standard ain't gonna matter.

Thanks again guys! I will give it another shot... having to program a friggin mic is ludicrous. Then there is like no documentation on the web. Your help is invaluable.
You saved this mic from becoming a C-clamp...

My Shars came with a 1" standard to check/set it by. In absolute it shoes 1.000 but in incremental it shoes 0.000
