To get electricity in the shed without needing permits run an extension cord from the house to the shed and wire the shed with all of the outlets and lights that you need. You only use one tool at a time so the extension cord never gets overloaded. My shed is built over an existing wood deck. I ran the cord under the deck. You would have to dig a trench for the wire to run in.
A way to get a bigger shed without involving permits is to build two 10x12's with a small gap between. Then fill in the gap and open a big doorway in each shed. The small gap becomes a storage area. You end up with either a 10x26 or a 12x22 shed.
That was one of the many options we looked at. We still have the 7x10 tent shed I re covered with corrugated and that’s going to be a dedicated metal storage shed. Our lot is very odd shaped being on a cul de sac and is very uneven. So lots of elevation change and no real room for the pad and maxy shed#2 close to each other and still clear the house and fence by 3’. My nephew knew nutbar was going to be a problem and was meticulous in his compliance so no inner wiring, plumbing, not even Sheetrock. I am on the lookout for some kind of folding cover for the pad as it can get very hot when sunny. Nothing like where you are Chuck, but I’m a confirmed temp wimp being a coastal kinda guy now.
The other major problem was the literally insane neighbor. Just when that first pic with the old shed in the background was taken we were headed out of town for several days and we get the mail and there’s this cease and desist order from the planning commission. Filled with all kinds of threats about building an illegal ADU, dust and noise violations along with violations about moving more than 50yrds of dirt etc etc. Had to tell the boys take the week off till we get back. SO and our contractor nephew took all relevant pics and went down and straightened it out. That didn’t slow the nutbar of the east from calling the inspector several times and hanging up on him when he pointed out we were legal. She even went in several times to the office and threw fits in there. If only he’d taken vids
Nobody complains about anything I do to my house. The former owner was a nut case who liked to antagonize people. The house was the worst eyesore in all of the development that I live in. It's now one of the nicer homes in the area.
Does the nut job go after everyone? Or just you? There's got to be something you can do. If she is submitting false documents and making false claims against people that is probably against the law.
Except for when we lived in a HOA development I’ve never had a neighbor complain. This woman is deranged but like so many crazy people can act normal when authorities arrive and there is nobody who wants to wade in on a crazy woman. Look at all the Karen vids on YouTube. And I’m not exaggerating, this woman makes all of them look sedate. We were not on her radar for several years as she was fully engaged with the couple across the street. She is what people accuse pitbulls of being. Once she clamps on she never lets go. So when the people across the street moved their parting shot was to call Animal control on her. Several nights a week she would let her Jack Russel terrier out at midnight but not let it back in. So it would go behind the people across the courts bedroom window and bark incessantly. Then when they would run it off it would come back and bark at nutbar’s front door until I’d squirt it with hose then it would go back across the street. Rinse and repeat until she left a 5am. When Animal control left notice nutbar decided it was us and it been one simply stupid thing after another. The thing that really gets her going is when we do improvements. She has a bad habit of hiring people to do something then not pay them. Nobody could believe the insane things she’s done.
The most chilling was when we asked her if we could replace the fence between us that is literally falling down. Her reply was my name was not on the deed here. WTH?? Her mother stole the house she lives in from her sisters so who knows what she can do to us by making up some kind of infraction. Better just never engage and we have made a pact the next time she goes off the rails the other is to grab up their phone and go out and record the exchange. If the whole rest of the development wasn’t all wonderful people we’d move.
I left the shed high, so any dog or cat can get under and take care of the creature issues. In the spring there about 4” of water there for a couple weeks most years.
Seasonal stuff only. Automotive spares for the old car and other stuff in containers. Oil paints not latex. I have a heated shed on a concrete pad for my lathe and tools.
