Looking for an AXA holder, but can't find the one I need!

To those who don't know: The OP is a wood turner. He's not got a metal lathe. He wants a 1 1/4" boring bar holder that will mount on a Smithy compound attached to his Nova Comet wood lathe. He's asking for a 1 1/4" boring bar holder for his AXA toolpost. But that doesn't exist. So we're all just tossing ideas at him, wondering which one will stick. Lol

Yes , and to hold what type of 1/2" bit ? He said cutting a radius but did not state if he would need a concave or convex cutter .

If you have a 1¼" boring bar it could be turned down to fit an AXA holder. If you can't do it on your lathe, perhaps you can find a local machine shop to do it for you, it shouldn't cost much.

I'm sure I have something down the basement he could use if the OP could post a pic of what exactly he needed . I could ship it down and he could ship it back . Anyone making banjos is a friend in my book ! :encourage:

1 1/4" bore . :) I use it for my air grinder on the lathe . The ledge could be milled or sawed down to 1/2" for an AXA holder if needed .

Here are pictures of my lathe setup currently. The 4th picture is what I need for a 1-1/4" boring bar to hold the 1/2" bit (the boring bar pictured is a 5/8, just to show how it'll be used) and obviously, I'll need to mount that somehow on my AXA toolpost.

And what surface are you cutting ? And , do you already have the bar ?

I do not have the bar. This is a cross section of what I will be turning. The red arrow is pointing to the location that the 5/16" radius bit is going to be cutting.

So this is the OD of the ring ?

With your skill set there's no need to stick with conventional tool holders, think outside the box!

If you only have woodworking equipment, consider making a dedicated plinth that replaces the entire compound. Laminate a block of hardwood or plywood that bolts down to the cross slide T slots with 4 tee nuts. Bore a 1 1/4" hole thru the block on the lathes centerline with a drill bit mounted in the headstock. Pre drill 4 hold down bolt holes, cut the top half off thru the center of the hole, add threaded inserts to the bottom of the plinth. Use the top to clamp the boring bar down. Keep the overhangs to a minimum and it will should be more rigid than the compound setup.

Forum etiquette dictates more pictures of your instruments!
