Lathe carriage biting the bed

Thank you Ken. I will have a good cleaning tommorow morning before I start working and see if that works. I will keep you updated. Thank you for your advice.

Had this on my Colchester, it was caused by the carriage lock being not fully slackened off, the carriage was free all apart from one place on the bed, loosened it another half turn, and the "catch" dissapeared. YMMV!

Great lathes. I get what you are saying, but unfortunately that is not the problem here,I already ruled that out,but thanks for your input.

From the photo's the bed is similar to a Hardinge bed. I would look for burrs on the bed up near the chuck. Have you examined the bed plate front and rear dovetails? Run a Hard Arkansas lapping stone on the bed and feel for burrs. From the photo's there looks like a sheet metal guard. Does it have any signs of hitting hard and binding up?

Also. If you loosened the gib screws to far and it dropped down on one end and if they got cockeyed it might bind. I pull out the gibs and clean them and re-install them making sure the screws line up correctly. Also when you adjust the gibs tighten them up near the tail-stock end. You will need to leave it loose or it could bind if you adjusted the gibs near the chuck. So adjust them near the TS end. Adjust them so there is easy movement back there with oil on the ways. You should pull the wipers off and clean then too. Be sure to wipe or brush away the dirt and not use an air blast. I would link you to a You Tube showing how to adjust the gib like they do on a milling machine, but have been told I can't. Rich

No that is fine Silverbullet. I think we figured out what the problem is an by "we" I mean my loving wife assisted me to find the problem. I knowI I said that I don't think any shafts are bent, but after eliminating everything you guys recommend it came to just that. The drive shaft is bent just a bit at about 2/3s down the length of the shaft, but HOW that happened only God knows, because I can't remember anything falling on it what so ever.20180228_151938.jpg
It is when the carriage reach this poin when it starts to bind. And I think the shaft then pushes the sliding bushing into the housing, because at that stage I cant turn it either.

I did try knocking it with careful planning of course, but it did not budge. So tomorrow when there is a bit of time I will remove the shaft and try to straighten it outside. I wil let you know how that went. Thanks guys

Hallo Rich,I did everything you recommend this morning. But like I said I think the problem lies with the drive shaft. At least I know the gibs are clean and adjusted now. I just hope I will have time tomorrow.

I was told by management when I came back that they were discussing if it was OK. I just am following what I was told.

If the square shaft is the problem I would check the tail stock end and see if the bracket moved some how. If you have an Dykem brush on layout fluid you may want to brush it on the shaft and see where it hits hard. Odd that it bent. Good job to you and your lovely wife in being detectives
