Is this a "real" Starrett 98-6

I looked at my very nice old Starrett to see if it was a 98, and found it is a Starrett 97--it looks the same as a 98, so what is the difference between the two? and is the 97 just as accuret ?

New Starrett 98 levels have a spec of about .005"/foot per graduation.

I have heard that the Starrett 98 has a ground and graduated vial, while 97 has plain bent glass vials. My other understanding is that the 98 has graduations in .005/12" and the 97 only has two marks to center the bubble between.

my 97 has 4 grad marks on each side of dead center. Dave

I shimmed under one end of level with some folded paper just to try and get a good picture with bubble in center. my keyboard is just as far off as I am.

Maybe it is a 98 in a 97 box. I have no idea. What I posted is what I have been told.

At least what you have is much better than what I have been told so you win.
