Re: In search of a good Steady Rest
Great job, Bill. Want to build another one? I need one, but I want mine steel.
Phil, Type 2 Class I (clear) or Class II (colored) Anodize (aka "soft" anodize) builds very little. Unless over-done, around 0.0002 per side. When seen on mechanical drawings, there usually is a note specifying that all dimensions apply after anodizing, but it really only affects closes tolerance features. I don't know how loose or tight Bill made the moving parts, but it may be a good opportunity to close things up by a selective hone/polish operation after anodize.
Type 3 (aka "hard") Anodize, on the other hand, can build up several thousandths and is quite hard. Close fitting parts should be masked off prior to this process.
