I think I have Problem!

.050 is not a big cut. I cut that much and more on a smaller machine, a Hercus 9AR all the time.

I wonder, how much overhang was there on the compound when making this cut and how much are you normally running? I find it hard to believe that even a poor casting would break like that when well supported.
 
I don't think .050 is that big either. I don't cut that deep very often but I have more then once without any problem. I also have a PM-1236T and still use the compound. I always have the top aligned with the bottom for support unless I'm cutting threads or a taper.

I needed it out a little, about a 1/2" because I was useing the 8" 4 jaw I'm turning 4x8" peice of 1144 stress proof. Making a 2.357 pulley. I was taking .050 depth of cut which is a .100 off the diamiter., I didn't want the outer jaws to contact the saddle or cross slide. Herd a cracking sound, hit the big red button and the tool post just tilted over forward. Don't know what caused it.

I'm with the others In the fact it must have been a defective. I'm going to be nervous now next time I want to make a deep cut. Maybe I will hold it to about .030 from now on.
 
I'm surprised that the compound is not Malleable Iron. It broke like scored glass right along a bottom corner of the T-slot.
My guess is that the compound was very extended (unsupported) and the Casting was unreasonably brittle.

IMO, PM should provide you a new compound free of charge.
 
PM''s service and help is first rate! Mike is doing g every thing he can to get a replacment. Matt and his crew will do what's right. They always have I have 3 of PM's machines and they have always stepped up. No worries.
