How to turn a Barrel?

A friend suggested using a follow rest behind the cutting tool. At the tailstock end turn down to just over the the finish dimension. Place the follow rest there (behind the cutting tool) and proceed slowly with small cuts toward the chamber end. Finish with very light cuts to dimension.

I was all primed to do just that today but I couldn't find my follow rest. I think it went with a lathe I sold about a year ago. So I'm going to see if my friend wants to take on the job. I'm figuring the charge would have to be around $75-100 a barrel.

Decided not to ruin good Ruger barrels for this project. Instead I bought a barrel liner from Brownells, fabricated the last 3 inches of the Ruger barrell out of 4140 and shrink fit it to the end of the barrel liner. An aluminum shroud with a screw in plug at the muzzle will finish the job. Pretty simple.

Pictures please of what you are doing. I think that I understand what you are proposing but a picture would be great.

I don't think I should send a photo. This is work for a client who has applied for a patent. When (if) he gets the patent you will see photos. I've probably said more than I should. Out,

Sounds like you are just tensioning barrels......that's nothing new.

No, never thought of that. Might be worth incorporating in the final design. Thanks.
