A couple of weeks ago, there was a thread posted on P-M advertising a Hendey 16x6 lathe "Free to _____ Home"...

It was about a 3½ hour drive each way for me, so I contacted the owner and picked it up last week and brought it home.

I don't know how much of a project I will make out of this... for now, I'll probably concentrate on getting it running and make some chips with it and decide how deep to dig into it later.

The lathe has been partially disassembled... most of the parts are there as far as I can tell, but there is one gear cover missing from the outboard end of the headstock. Maybe I'll be able to get a replacement off ebay eventually.

I do know it will need a new thrust washer for the spindle, and the brass spindle bearing cover behind the chuck is in very poor condition... I don't know if I can save it.

The half nuts on these lathes are cast iron with poured babbit threads... these half nuts have no babbit left... it has all been melted out. I will likely try to re-pour the babbit... I have a good bit of experience casting lead, but this will be a learning experience.

It has a Drive-All gearbox mounted...

...but no motor. I have a 2hp motor... but the top was off the gearbox, so I assumed there was something wrong there. I was correct. Inside the gearbox, the hub on one of the sliding gears has been broken and a braze repair was attempted...

...and there is matching carnage on the shift fork...

I'll attempt to perform a better repair on that.

It also came with a taper attachment...

I think I have all the parts to the TA, including the bed clamp.

There is also a steady rest and a large Westcott combination chuck with it.

Just what I needed... something else to work on... but the price was right, anyway!
