I have a Smithy 1220 XL
I Need change gears. Smithy wants $30 plus per gear.
These have the quad keyway set up.

Question : anyone making a conversion to single key way? Or a source of these gears even 3D printed?

Sadly I crashed another gear when I fell out of sequence and forgot to reverse the motor direction . FWIW this machine has no thread dial and cant undo the half nut . You need to power machine on and off and reverse the motor , real pita.
Anyway getting cold and just missed the motor rotation change.

30$ doesn't sound so bad- an Atlas gear would probably be roughly the same on Ebay
Gotta remember your chances of making a mistake go up when you are:
A) Cold
B) Tired
C) Hungry
D) Being tickled by a hungry girlfriend
E) Being meowed at by a hungry, pestiferous cat

$30 for a gear is actually cheap. I need a 32T gear for the Clausing I'm giving a light overhaul. It's a standard 16DP, 4-1/2PA gear and Clausing wants $65 for it and it's only got one standard keyway. Years ago it was $1/tooth but now it's double that, or more.

Rather than spend $65 for one gear I bought a dividing head and am going to set up my smaller horizontal mill to learn how to make gears. I've 3D printed some gears as well, and they've held up nicely, but unless you get them made for free like Ulma is offering, they're still going to be close to $30 a gear for something like that if you get them from one of the guys selling gears on eBay and on their own websites.

I was considering buying some from ebay they are $2-$6 each then setting up to do the key ways.
It will months maybe years before I get a anywhere close to cutting my own gears.

I dont wven want to know the cost of tooling to cut gears on this old smithy 1220 XL . Im already frustrated with rhe mill head.

Before buying gears I suggest you try running my online program RideTheGearTrain dot com. You can experiment by adding new gears to your list in the program and see how it affects the threads you can cut. To enter the thread pitch you can click button 5A, but if you want solutions for a list of pitches (eg all the standard M-series pitches for metric threads) you can click button 5B instead. Many people discover that they don't need as many gears as they thought.
