My shop is only 12' x 20'. I set up my grinder at the end of the room shooting its nasty dust toward the wall. I even put a piece of osb on the side my shelf to protect my tooling.

My buddy gave me a dust separator he bought many years ago at Hazard Fraught and never used because the inlet/outlet are not a standard size.

I adapted it with some abs plastic fittings, bought an extension hose, and a hood.

My best option was making a frame and hanging it off the shelf above. I used a carriage bolt and thumb knob so I can loosen it and pivot it out if the way or remove it.

My 6.5hp Rigid shop vac is powerful and quiet...quiet enough that I don't mind running it while I'm grinding.

It was extremely satisfying to dress the wheel and watch the vast majority of the dust flow right into the hood.....

For a small hobby shop guy like me this is a huge step toward keeping that part of my shop clean.

Wait until you grind cast iron. You will really like the vac. Dave
It's funny. I was thinking about how clean it will keep the shop. I wasn't thinking about how much cleaner the air will be when I'm grinding. No more dirty boogers......

You might want to still buy black hankies. A high pressure low cfm shop vac doesn't pull enough air to clear the air totally. Dave

I had a similar setup for my grinder and found it was better than nothing but not great. I had mocked up a collector attached the to grinder bed but much closer to the end of the chuck.

Mine is right at the wheel. your's like @benmychree says is too far away. it's not catching most of the dust. I get a good percentage. But some still escapes. You have to realize that sucking up dust is best done very close to the source. Blowing it can be done farther away. There are many studies of dust collection... put it right at the wheel.20200815_201850.jpg

It would work all the better if the collection port were attached to the wheel guard.
That would get in the way. This grinder doesn't have a port and I'm not modifying the guard. I'd rather have it where it is.

I can move it later if I want
